LNG Bunkering in Europe
LNG bunkering
LNG plays a vital role in the maritime industry’s transition toward decarbonization. Compared to conventional fossil fuels, LNG emits significantly less CO₂, making it a cleaner alternative for ship propulsion.
NYK Group has been a pioneer in introducing LNG fuel to the shipping sector. In 2016, United European Car Carriers (UECC), an NYK Group company, launched the world’s first LNG-fueled pure car and truck carrier (PCTC).
Simultaneously, the world’s first LNG bunkering vessel using the ship-to-ship (STS) method, GREEN ZEEBRUGGE, also entered service—marking a major milestone in LNG fuel supply infrastructure.
Nearly a decade later, the use of LNG as a marine fuel continues to expand steadily. GREEN ZEEBRUGGE remains in active operation across Europe, with Energy Division responsible for its commercial operations and SMUK responsible for its ship management.
As demand for LNG fuel continues to grow, the role of LNG bunkering vessels like GREEN ZEEBRUGGE is becoming increasingly important in supporting the industry’s shift toward more sustainable energy solutions.
