Green Business

As part of its long-term business strategy, NYK Group is leading the maritime industry’s transition toward decarbonization through investments in next-generation energy solutions. The company is actively building supply chains for alternative fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen, while also pioneering new markets including CO₂ maritime transport.

NYK views decarbonization not only as an environmental responsibility but also as a core pillar of future business development. The Group has set ambitious greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets: a 45% reduction by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Achieving these goals requires the adoption of carbon-free fuels like ammonia and hydrogen, as well as the use of biofuels.

In August 2024, NYK became the first company in the world to complete a commercial vessel powered by ammonia fuel. By 2026, the Group plans to launch an ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC), which will also be used to transport ammonia—further expanding NYK’s role in the clean energy value chain.

Recognizing that sustainability cannot be achieved in isolation, NYK is committed to cross-industry collaboration and global partnerships. The Group aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping by around 2050. With the IMO set to introduce a vessel-specific carbon pricing scheme in 2028, NYK is proactively turning regulatory changes into new business opportunities.
