NYK and YLK Jointly Hold Training Program for Staff from around the World - This year's theme: 'Stay Half a Step Ahead' -
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; head office: Tokyo; president: Tadaaki Naito) and Yusen Logistics Co. Ltd. (YLK; head office: Tokyo; president: Kenji Mizushima) jointly conducted their 2017 Global NYK/YLK Week from October 16 to 20 in Japan. Twenty-two staff members from around the world were nominated from the Group's global business bases to attend the program, along with a handful of employees based in Japan.
This training program has been jointly held by NYK and YLK since 2012 to deepen interaction among the participants across national, division, and company boundaries and further strengthen links and networks.
This year's theme was 'Stay Half a Step Ahead.' The participants were given lectures about the NYK Group Values* and NYK's initiatives to differentiate itself from its competitors. The participants were then divided into four groups, and after using various analytical methods to determined worldwide events that could be realized in five years, the group engaged in active discussions on issues the NYK Group should address. Each group then made a presentation on its theme to board members, including the presidents of NYK and YLK, thus allowing the groups to have an impact on the Group's business management.
At the end of the week, the participants traveled to Kyoto for a day of Japanese culture and learned about traditional methods to relax mind and body through Zen meditation.
It is expected that all participants will take their experiences from the five-day program back to their offices to share with their colleagues, and that they will use what they learned in this program in their everyday work.

NYK Conducts Short-term Exchange Program for Maritime Schools in Japan and the Philippines
The NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA), which NYK operates in the Philippines, successfully conducted an international short-term student-exchange program with national maritime schools in Japan during the months of August through October 2017.
- Short-term study abroad from Japan
From August 30 to September 9, 2017, 10 students from the Hiroshima and Yuge colleges of the National Institute of Technology travelled to the Philippines. During the visits, the students stayed at the NTMA dormitory and participated in study and activities at the school. They spent their weekends sightseeing and interacting with the NTMA students.
- Short-term study abroad from NTMA
From October 15 to 21, 2017, 10 students from NTMA travelled to Japan and visited the National Institute of Technology???s Yuge College in Ehime prefecture for classes and drills. The students also visited a container terminal in Tokyo, the NYK Maritime Museum, and NYK Hikawamaru.
Students from both countries attended classes and drills together, interacting with one another in English, and left with greater stimulation and motivation.
NYK will continue to stimulate an interest in the seafaring life by encourage young adults to gain a global perspective.
Gas4Sea selected by Statoil for LNG bunkering in Rotterdam
Gas4Sea partners - ENGIE, Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK - have been selected by Norwegian multinational energy group Statoil to be their LNG marine fuel supplier in the port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, for four crude shuttle tankers.
The four planned dual fuel vessels are to come into service in early 2020; they will be operated by Statoil in Northern European seas.
Gas4Sea will supply LNG using the ENGIE Zeebrugge which started operations earlier this year. She is currently performing regular ship-to-ship LNG bunkering services in the port of Zeebrugge, in Belgium. LNG Bunkering vessel (LBV) ENGIE Zeebrugge holds an LNG capacity of 5,000 m3 and is designed to serve a full range of shipping customers, in Zeebrugge as well as neighbouring ports.
Gas4Sea is a commercial brand jointly launched by ENGIE, Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK in 2016 to develop the use of LNG as a sustainable, reliable, safe and cost-effective alternative to conventional oil-based marine fuels. Its purpose and ambition is to accompany the shipping sector in the upcoming transition towards a greener maritime environment, in Europe and worldwide.
Start-up Supported by NYK Group Wins Top Prize at Singapore's Smart Port Challenge 2017
A start-up that has received support from NYK Group South Asia Pte. Ltd. (NGSA) and Symphony Creative Solutions Pte. Ltd. (SCS)*, both NYK Group companies, has won the top prize at Smart Port Challenge 2017** launched by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) in June 2017.
NGSA and SCS issued the challenge of 'using automation to help ships meet regulatory clearance' to the 81 start-ups participating in the event, and subsequently selected a start-up that had proposed the use of RPA*** technology to achieve the task. NGSA and SCS supported the start-up as a mentor to create innovative solutions that would to meet the challenge. At the end of September, the start-up was awarded the top prize out of 12 finalists by experts in the maritime and venture capital industries.
The NYK Group will continue to promote innovation and provide new value to the maritime and logistics industry by developing advanced, creative solutions.

LNG Production gets underway at Australia's Wheatstone LNG Project
Western Australia???s Wheatstone LNG Project (the ???Project???) commenced production of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Project, in which PE Wheatstone Pty. Ltd. (???PEW???) participates, is located in the Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area 12 kilometers west of Onslow in Western Australia. PEW is a subsidiary of Pan Pacific Energy K.K. (???PE???), which is jointly owned by four Japanese entities - Mitsubishi Corporation (???MC???), Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (???NYK Line???), JERA Co., Inc. (???JERA???) and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (???JOGMEC???). The Project processes natural gas produced from the Wheatstone and Iago gas fields located in the offshore area of Western Australia???s North West Shelf into LNG for export.
The production of the first batch of LNG marks the start-up of the Project, just over five years after PEW obtained interests comprising a 10% stake in gas fields and an 8% stake in LNG plant facilities in June 2012.
The Wheatstone LNG Project is led and operated by Chevron Australia, which is also undergoing construction work on a second liquefaction train. The Project will have a combined capacity to produce 8.9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG. PEW???s equity share of production, approximately 0.7 MTPA of LNG, will be supplied to JERA under a long-term Sale and Purchase Agreement (???SPA???).
The number of countries importing LNG has been increasing in light of increases in world energy consumption due to overall population growth. There is also a growing global trend towards a preference for clean energy sources such as natural gas and LNG in keeping with measures aimed at tackling climate change. Against this backdrop of growing global demand, it is critical that Japanese players secure stable sources for ensuring long-term sustainable natural gas supplies. The Project also carries profound significance in terms of securing energy resources through cooperation between public and private sectors.
The first cargo of LNG from the Project will be shipped in the coming weeks.
