Merseyside, England October 2007:

NYK wins sustainable transport award

In partnership with Jaguar and Land Rover, NYK Logistics (UK) Ltd has won the Best Freight Initiative category in the inaugural Merseyside Transport Awards.

The awards were celebrated as part of the first Merseyside Transport Conference held at St George's Hall in Liverpool on 17 October. The conference was chaired by Lucy Siegle, a reporter from BBC's The One Show and Observer columnist with a keynote speech from Professor Robert Cochrane from Imperial College London.

Winners were selected by the Merseyside Local Transport Partnership from across the region for their outstanding contributions in achieving a more sustainable transport future.

With the launch of Freelander 2 at Halewood Operations in October 2006 considerably increasing production at the plant, Jaguar and Land Rover has worked closely with NYK to minimise the impact of increased inbound and outbound volumes on the local transport infrastructure, environment and community, implementing a range of supply chain initiatives to optimise resource utilisation.

As a result, a 60% increase in production has resulted in a mere 30% increase in the total distance travelled by components used in the manufacturing operation, effectively saving more than 100,000 driven miles and 1,000 tonnes of CO2.

Neil Scales, Chair of the LTP Partnership and Chief Executive of Merseytravel, said: "The awards are an opportunity to reward some of the great work being carried out across Merseyside to help us all to reach our goal of creating a more sustainable transport network. Congratulations to all of the winners and thank you to everyone who entered and helped to make the event such a big success."

Thomas Klein, Halewood Operations Director, said "The plant's productivity grew last year following the launch of the Land Rover Freelander 2. During launch preparations, NYK Logistics and Halewood employees delivered numerous freight efficiency improvements which minimised the impact of transport on the environment and local community. I'd like to congratulate NYK Logistics and the Halewood team on this excellent achievement."
