Amsterdam, 20th May 2008:
New rail connection Amsterdam-Acht
The Ceres Paragon Terminal (‘Ceres’) in Amsterdam has today handled the first train connecting the container facility in Amsterdam and the rail terminal in Acht near Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The rail connection is maintained by Rail Terminal Eindhoven and rail operator ACTS.
It is the plan that as of now at least one departure per week will be maintained between Amsterdam and Acht and with this connection the link with the South of the Netherlands will be further improved. Liselot Baarsma, marketing manager of Ceres comments: ‘Apart from the daily barge connection to Tilburg, maintained for a number of shippers, we now see that a number of other large importers have decided to route their business through Amsterdam.’ She continues: ‘It clearly shows that there is a demand for congestion free and environmentally friendly corridors. Especially the advantages of on-dock rail, fast and cost-efficient handling will result in shorter lead times and lower costs. In this respect the Ceres terminal in Amsterdam is a perfect option.’
Ceres expects that, as happened in the past with other new connections, that the product will achieve more awareness in the short term. This will also attract other shippers in the Eindhoven area to make use of this new and efficient connection.
To accommodate further growth in the number of connections, Ceres constructs at this moment a 3rd track of 700 meters on its on-dock rail facility. Baarsma says: ‘With this 3rd track we will have ample space and flexibility to grow continuously and increase the number of containers handled by rail. The on-dock facility clearly shows its advantages when handling rails cars and shippers are increasingly using the product.’
Ceres handles per week: 3 Europe Far East services, > 20 barges services, 8 rail services and 8 feeders services.
